There is a famous Chinese story called “The Old Man and His Horse.” In Chinese, it is also called “塞翁失马” or “sai weng shi ma.” The story is as follows:
In ancient China, an old man lost his horse. The neighbors were so sad for him and said, “It is so terrible that you lost your horse!” But the old man said, “I do not know if it is a good thing or a bad thing. Who knows?”
Later, the horse came back with many other horses. The neighbors were happy for the old man. They said, “You have many horses now. You are very lucky!” He said, “maybe I am, but maybe not.”
Just like the old man said, something bad came from the good thing. His son, while he was riding one of the horses, fell and injured himself. The neighbors came to the old man again and said, “It is so sad what happened to your son. It is so terrible!” The wise old man told them, “Maybe it is a bad thing and maybe it is a good thing.”
Some time later, a war broke out. Every boy in the village had to go to war to fight the enemy. A great many died fighting. But the old man’s son did not go because of his injury. His son, in the end, was one of the only young men in the village to survive.
The message from the story is that we can never predict what could happen in the future based on the present.
በቻይና ሀገር አንድ በጣም የታወቀ አፈ ታሪክ አለ። የታሪኩ ስም “ሽማግሌው እና ፈረሱ” ይባላል። በቻይንኛ ደግሞ “塞翁失马” ወይም “ሳይ ወንግ ሽ ማ” ይባላል። ታሪኩ እንዲህ ነው።
ጥንታዊ ቻይና ውስጥ አንድ ሽማግሌ ሰውዬ ፈረሱ ተሰወረበት። ቢፈለግ ቢፈለግ የትም አልተገኘም። የሽማግሌው ጎረቤትዎች እሳቸውን ሊያፅናኑ እቤታቸው መጡ። “በጣም ያሳዝናል! ምን አይነት መጥፎ ክስተት ነው?” ብለውም አማረሩ። ሽማግሌው ግን “ጥሩ ይሁን መጥፎ ማን ያውቃል?” ሲሉ መለሱ።
ከጥቂት ቀናት በኋላ የሽማግሌው ፈረስ ሌሎች ብዙ ፈረሶችን አስከትሎ እየጋለበ መጣ። የሽማግሌው ጎረቤትዎችም ደስ አላቸው። “ደስ ይበልዎት! አሁን የብዙ ፈረሶች ባለቤት ሆነዋልና” ብለው ለሽማግሌው መልካም ምኞታቸውን ገለፁ። ሽማግሌው ግን አሁንም “ማን ያውቃል? ይህ ጥሩ እድል ሊሆንም ላይሆንም ይችላል” ሲሉ ተናገሩ።
ሽማግሌው እንዳሉትም መጥፎ ነገር ተከሰተ። የሽማግሌው ወንድ ልጅ አንዱን ፈረስ እየጋለበ ሳለ ከፈረሱ ጀርባ ላይ ወድቆ ቁስለት ደረሰበት። እንደተለመደው የሽማግሌው ጎረቤትዎች መጡ። “በጣም ያሳዝናል” አሉ። ሽማግሌው ግን አሁንም “ማን ያውቃል? ይህ ጥሩ እድል ሊሆንም ላይሆንም ይችላል” አሉ።
ከትንሽ ጊዜ በኋላም ሀገራቸውን የሚያጠቃ ጠላት መጣ። ጦርነትም ግድ ሆነ። ለአቅም የደረሰ ወንድ ልጅ በሙሉ እንዲዘምትም ተደረገ። በዚህ ጊዜ ግን የሽማግሌው ልጅ ገና እያገገመ ስለነበር እንዲዘምት አልተፈቀደለትም። በዚህም ምክንያት የመንደሩ ወንድ ልጆች በጦርነቱ ምክንያት ሲያልቁ እሱ ግን ተረፈ።
ይህ ታሪክ የሚያስተምረን ወደፊት የሚሆነውን ማንም እንደማያውቅ ነው።
